Nairobi County government has said Uhuru Park is off limits until October 20 to allow the military to prepare for Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The announcement comes at a time when protests by the opposition are ongoing and supporters have been convening at the park before proceeding to city streets.

Speaking to the Nation, acting County Secretary Leboo Ole Montintat said the park will be closed to the public from Friday to October 20.

He said the decision was reached after it emerged that this year’s celebrations will take place at the Uhuru Park.

Mashujaa Day celebrations are held on October 20 every year to honour the great men and women who struggled for independence.

“Celebrations will be held at Uhuru Park, a monumental ground of great historical importance for our country. Various preparations for the forthcoming celebrations have been going on over the last few weeks to accord the day highest standards possible,” said Mr Leboo.

He urged the public to cooperate and honour heroes and heroines of Kenya’s history.
