Android updates can be a touchy subject for the tech crowd. Some users are left in the dark while others will either find a ROM for their unsupported device or simply purchase a new device to receive future updates if they have the funds or upgrade ability for it. OnePlus, like many other smartphone OEMs, update their handsets for so long and then move on to the next one. The company has confirmed that the OnePlus 3/3T will not be receiving any Android updates after Android O.
Head of Product from OnePlus, Oliver Z., went to the OnePlus 3/3T forums for some Q&A session to talk to some folks about updates for that handset. Much was talked about, but the one thing that stood out to all was what Oliver said about the 3/3T not getting any other major updates after Android O.
Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for the OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates.
Furthermore, Oliver went on to say that the Open Beta program for the 3/3T will end and solely be for the current flagship, the OnePlus 5. It’s a bummer to see that the 14-month old OnePlus 3 and the nine-month old 3T will not be able to get updates after this next major Android update iteration. No details of Android O hitting these phones was ever mentioned, but by the time it is out, the phone will be just shy of being unsupported for future updates. Seeing that the 18 month mark is usually the cut off for phones getting any other major Android update, it actually makes sense that Android O would be the last one for that phone.
