Mug for alcoholic beverage could cause contamination

(WTVG) - It's a popular mug for a popular drink, but it could hold more than just a Moscow Mule. Iowa's Alcoholic Beverages Division says the copper mugs used to serve the adult beverage could be dangerous.

The agency says the alcoholic mix of vodka, ginger beer and lime juice has a pH level lower than six. According to the experts, that could cause the copper to leak into the drink. Enough copper can be poisonous.

Experts point out that the copper mugs often include a stainless steel liner. That protects the drinker from any potential copper contamination.
