Health Cabinet secretary Cleopa Mailu has confirmed that a total of 5O police officers were infected by cholera and 47 are still admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The affected officers were residing at the Multi Media University hotel in Rongai.
They are believed to have shared a meal from an outsourced caterer. The CS has also banned outside catering within Nairobi County.
Cases of outbreak of cholera have been rampant and on increase in Nairobi because of many issues including contaminated food.
The county health department has also deployed teams to the ground to find out more information about the confirmed cholera cases.
Nairobi County health executive Bernard Muia said the police officers had been mobilized and housed at the university, located in the outskirts of Nairobi, to act in case any form of violence broke out.
Nairobi governor Sunday in a statement confirmed the incident saying the oficers are quarantined at the hospital awaiting confirmatory tests.
“Ten adults housed at the Multimedia University were yesterday taken ill with severe abdominal upset and diarrhea, and are currently admitted at Sinai Hospital in Rongai, Kajiado County. Rapid diagnostic tests for cholera have been done on the ten and found positive. All are quarantined at the said hospital awaiting confirmatory tests”, he said.
The governor said they have dispatched a disease surveillance team, public health officers and health promotion officers to the sites to investigate the causes of the outbreak and also the state of the sick.
“So far there is no cause for alarm as the situation is under control. I will be sharing with you updates,” he assured.
